Pick spot on the Ryder Cup Team...Shared Phoenix Open first-round
lead after opening 64. Second-round 66 had him alone in second,
five strokes behind Mark Calcavecchia. Closed with two 70s for fourth
place finish...T4 at Bob Hope Chrysler Classic after closing with
62-67...Went one better at WORLDCOM CLASSIC with T3 finish...Opened
with an 8-under 62 to take first-round lead at Verizon Byron Nelson
Classic. Shared second- and third-round leads after rounds of 67-68.
Closing 66 produced playoff with Robert Damron. Damron won playoff
with birdie on fourth extra hole. Was trying to become first Dallas-born
player to win the event...Shared first-round lead at Memorial after
opening with 66. T24 after closing with 72-72-76...Following T7
at PGA Championship, selected by Curtis Strange as one of two Captain's
Choices for Ryder Cup team. First Ryder Cup rookie to make team
as Captain's Choice...Three weeks later, earned fourth PGA TOUR

lifted him into contention. Third-round 66 put him one stroke ahead

over Bob Estes and Joey Sindelar. 63 broke Royal Montreal course
record (64) set earlier in the day by Pride. 54-hole total of 11-under
199 and final total of 14-under 266, lowest ever at Royal Montreal...Seventh
top-10 came in Invensys Classic at Las Vegas, where closing rounds
of 65-67 earned a T7 finish...Posted final top-10 at THE TOUR Championship,
where he held the second- and third-round leads by one stroke. Final-round

Returned to the winner's circle for the first time since 1988 with
victory at Reno-Tahoe Open. His time between victories (12 years,
27 days) is the fourth longest in PGA TOUR history. Trailed third-round
leader Jean Van de Velde by five strokes after 54 holes. Final-round
67 earned a tie with Van de Velde and Verplank won playoff with
an eight-foot birdie putt on the fourth extra hole...After missing
the cut at the PGA Championship, won the next week at Reno and started
a stretch in which he finished in the top-10 in four of his final
eight appearances...Ranked third in Driving Accuracy (78.8%). 1998:
Ten top-10 finishes, including two runner-ups and one third...Lost
playoff to Trevor Dodds at Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic on
first extra hole...Finished fifth at THE TOUR Championship. THE
TOUR Championship start his first since 1988, longest span between
appearances in event history (Tom Watson previous longest, 1987
to 1996)...Earnings of $1,223,436 placed him 18th on money list,
highest finish by Q-School grad since John Daly was 17th in 1991...With
Daly, represented United States in World Cup of Golf and won individual
title with 9-under-par 279, one stroke better than Nick Faldo and
Costantino Rocca...Chosen by his peers as PGA TOUR Comeback Player
of the Year. 1997: Finished as medalist at 1997 PGA TOUR Qualifying
Tournament to regain PGA TOUR card. 1996: Required surgery on elbow
again and received special medical extension for 1997. 1994: Played

of season and the prior year due to first elbow surgery. 1988: Earned
second TOUR title at the Buick Open, where a final-round 66 produced
two-stroke victory over Doug Tewell. 1985: Became first amateur
in 29 years to win a PGA TOUR event (Doug Sanders at 1956 Canadian
Open) when he defeated Jim Thorpe in a playoff at the Western Open.
