Earned his first U.S. Open start by surviving a 5-for-2 playoff in the Memphis, Tenn., sectional after posting a 36-hole total of 7-under 135 at Germantown Country Club and Ridgeway Country Club. Lone professional win to date is the 2015 Northern California Open. Had a distinguished amateur career that included winning the 2014 California State Amateur. Also won the 2010 California State High School title. Started college career at Long Beach State and was the 2012 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year before transferring to San Diego State to play his final three seasons. Still holds a number of SDSU records, including all-time scoring average (71.50) and lowest tournament score in relation to par (-17). One of his teammates at SDSU was 2014 U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang. Born to German/French naturalized immigrant father and a Chinese Taipei/Japanese naturalized immigrant mother. His great-grandfathers were both talented athletes. Johann Hoffmann (soccer) won multiple Bohemian, Austrian and French titles, while Richard Schauffele excelled in soccer and track and field, garnering more than 40 titles in discus, javelin and the shot put.
