12 More Players Are Exempt For U.S. Open; Total Now 75

Far Hills, N.J. – Twelve more professional golfers have earned full exemptions into the 2009 U.S. Open, to be played June 18-21 at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.

The exemptions were awarded to those players who met one or more of the following criteria: players who were included among the top 50 point leaders of the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 25, 2009; players who were in the top 10 money leaders from the 2009 official PGA Tour money list, through May 25; and players who were in the top five money leaders from the 2009 official PGA European Tour money list, through May 25.

Those who earned full exemptions through the current World Golf Ranking were Paul Casey, Luke Donald, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, Rory McIlroy, Sean O’Hair, Ian Poulter, Alvaro Quiros, Justin Rose, Rory Sabbatini, Adam Scott, David Toms and Nick Watney. The remaining 38 of the top 50 ranked players were already fully exempt through other criteria.

Casey, O’Hair, Sabbatini and Watney also earned full exemptions by ranking among the year’s top 10 money leaders on the PGA Tour, as of May 25. The rest of the top 10 money leaders were already fully exempt.

Casey and McIlroy were additionally fully exempt because both were in the top five money leaders on the PGA European Tour for 2009, as of May 25.

Additional exemptions from sectional qualifying could be earned by the winners of the PGA Tour events to be played prior to the U.S. Open, if the winner is not already fully exempt and it is his second PGA Tour win since last June 2.

The first two sectional qualifiers were held May 25 in Japan and England, where 16 spots in the 156-player field were determined. Sectional qualifying in the USA will take place at 13 sites on June 8.
