Earned his first U.S. Open start by advancing out of a 6-for-3 playoff at the Ono City, Japan, qualifier on May 22, after carding a 7-under 137. On May 28, Kim registered his first Japan Golf Tour victory in the Mizuno Open, taking the title by five strokes. Although born in the Republic of Korea, Kim spent most of his childhood in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Arizona State University after graduating from Hamilton High in Mesa, Ariz. He currently resides in Gilbert, Ariz., but plays primarily in Asia. He did win the 2009 Pacific Coast Amateur at The Gallery outside of Tucson, Ariz.
