Senior Managing Director, Open Championships & Association Relations
Mike Butz has served as the United States Golf Association’s senior managing director of Open Championships & Association Relations since April 2011. His primary duties include oversight and advance planning of the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Amateur, Walker Cup Match and the newly created U.S. Senior Women’s Open. He also oversees the USGA’s Regional Affairs, Handicapping and Course Rating, GHIN and Merchandise and Licensing departments.
Butz, who joined the USGA in 1980 as manager of regional affairs for the Southeastern Region, served as USGA interim executive director following David Fay’s retirement in December 2010. He’s also served the USGA as a deputy executive director, senior director of Open Championships and executive administration, Championship Relations director and Championship Relations manager. He was also general chairman of the 1995 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.
Born in Chambersburg, Pa., Butz began playing golf at age 4 and was a caddie for many years. His father was a self-taught, eight-time club champion who introduced him to the family spirit of the game. Junior golf, family golf and caddie programs have always been of particular interest to him because of the role they played in his life.
A graduate of Wake Forest University, Butz and his wife of 33 years, Leslie, reside in Bethlehem, Pa. They have two children, Spencer and Molly.
