The former world No. 1 survived sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio, by earning one of the 14 available berths. He shot 5-under 137 at Brookside Golf & Country Club and Scioto Country Cub to earn his 14th U.S. Open start. In 2013 at Merion Golf Club, he opened with a 68 and finished tied for eighth. The Englishman owns 17 worldwide victories, five of which have come on the PGA Tour. His last PGA Tour win came in the 2012 Transitions Championship. He has twice won the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW Championship at Wentworth (2011 and 2012). Donald enjoyed a decorated amateur career that included a pair of Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup victories in 1999 and 2001. He also won the NCAA title in 1999 while playing for Northwestern University. He advanced to the semifinals of the 2000 U.S. Amateur at Baltusrol Golf Club. He also won consecutive Northeast Amateur titles in 2000 and 2001. He represented Great Britain and Ireland in the 1998 and 2000 World Amateur Team Championships and has played on four European Ryder Cup Teams.
