Earned his second U.S. Open start by shooting 11-under 133 in the Mie Prefecture, Japan, sectional qualifier at Kuwana Country Club. Lost a 2-for-1 playoff for the last spot, but was later awarded a spot in the U.S. Open when the England sectional qualifier did not have the expected full field. Kim registered his first Japan Golf Tour victory in the 2018 Mizuno Open, taking the title by five strokes. Although born in the Republic of Korea, Kim spent most of his childhood in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Arizona State University after graduating from Hamilton High in Mesa, Ariz. He currently resides in Gilbert, Ariz., but plays primarily in Asia. He did win the 2009 Pacific Coast Amateur at The Gallery outside of Tucson, Ariz. He tied for 11th in the 2017 Open Championship conducted by The R&A.
