Garnered spot in the 2010 U.S. Open as first alternate from Columbus, Ohio, sectional qualifier
Took an ailing Tiger Woods to 19 holes in a Monday playoff last June at Torrey Pines before making a bogey on the first sudden-death hole. His second-place showing was his best finish in 14 U.S. Open appearances
Started using long putter to ease chronic back issues and became first to win a PGA Tour event with that implement at 1991 Doral-Ryder Open
Owns five PGA Tour victories, the last coming at 2002 Greater Greensboro Classic
With help from Champions Tour member Jim Feree during college, Mediate developed a swing good enough to compete on the PGA Tour
Also credits his Florida Southern coach, Charlie Matlock, for influencing his career
Played at Florida Southern with two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen
Has competed in the World Series of Poker and done some work as an on-course commentator for The Golf Channel
