Lake Merced Golf Club and The Olympic Club are paired up together in Northern California for a third time. Both clubs have hosted USGA championships, with the former holding the 1990 U.S. Junior Amateur (Matthew Todd) and 2012 U.S. Girls' Junior (Minjee Lee). The club also hosted the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic from 2014-16.
The Ocean Course served as the stroke play co-host venue for the 2007 U.S. Amateur (Colt Knost) and the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship in 2015 that was won by Nathan Smith and Todd White. Olympic's Lake Course has hosted five U.S. Opens and will host the 2021 U.S. Women's Open.
Headlining the 86 professionals and amateurs scheduled to compete are Todd and Andy Miller, the sons of 1973 U.S. Open champion Johnny Miller. Both are professionals. Other noted professionals in the field include past PGA Tour winner Kevin Sutherland, now on the PGA Tour Champions, Byron Meth, the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, and Web.com Tour winner Max Homa, a member of the victorious 2013 USA Walker Cup Team.
Notable amateurs in the field include 2017 USA Walker Cup competitor Colin Morikawa and Thomas Lehman Jr., the son of major champion and multiple PGA Tour winner Tom Lehman.
The qualifier is conducted by the Northern California Golf Association, one of the 59 Allied Golf Associations supported by the USGA.
