Shadow Hawk Golf Club
Richmond, Texas • qualifying: Jun 04, 2018
Shadow Hawk Golf Club, a Rees Jones design that opened in 1999, is hosting sectional qualifying for the first time in a decade. The club was the site for two previous USGA championships: the 2005 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur won by Mary Ann Lapointe and the 2011 U.S. Mid-Amateur won by Randal Lewis, who at the age of 54 became the oldest champion in the event's history.
Angel Cabrera, who outdueled Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to win the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, headlines the 52 professionals and amateurs scheduled to compete. The Argentinian also claimed the 2009 Masters in a playoff. PGA Tour winner Ryan Palmer also is in the field, along with 2017 USA Walker Cup competitor Cameron Champ, who turned professional last fall. Champ was one of two amateurs (Scottie Scheffler) to make the 36-hole cut last year at Erin Hills.
Sammy Schmitz, the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, 2015 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Philip Barbaree and 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur runner-up Matthew Wolff are the notable amateurs in the field.
The Texas Golf Association, one of 59 Allied Golf Associations supported by the USGA, will conduct the qualifier.
