Within the U.S. Open Championship, there is another competition going on that is often critical to players’ futures. Anyone who finishes in the top 10 (and ties) and who isn’t otherwise exempt receives entry into the following year’s U.S. Open. For players such as Denny McCarthy, Joel Dahmen, Adam Hadwin and Hayden Buckley, it would mean not having to go through the gauntlet of 36-hole final qualifying. All four of them earned their places in this year’s field in the final stage on June 6, and Buckley survived a 5-for-1 playoff to get his spot. A top-10 finish and guaranteed entry for 2023 on the North Course at The Los Angeles Country Club is just as valued as the earnings the player will receive for his high finish.
