Ryo Ishikawa earned his fifth U.S. Open start, and first since 2015, by finishing among the top two on the Japan Golf Tour money list. Known in his native Japan as the "Bashful Prince," Ishikawa burst onto the scene with a lot of fanfare when he captured the 2007 Munsingwear Open KSB Cup on the JGT as an amateur at the age of 15 years, 8 months. He turned professional a year later and quickly won another JGT event. By 2009, he was competing in PGA Tour events with a best finish of 71st in the Transitions Championship outside of Tampa, Fla. Of his 18 worldwide victories, 17 have come in Japan. He is still seeking a breakthrough performance in a major, with his best finish a tie for 20th in the 2011 Masters. Ishikawa represented the International Team in the 2009 and 2011 Presidents Cup, and has represented Japan twice in the World Cup (2013 and 2016). He did tie for eighth in the 2015 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
