The Floridian will make his sixth U.S. Open start after earning his place in the field by tying for second in the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tenn. Memphis has been a good spot for Berger as he registered his first PGA Tour win in his second season at the FedEx St. Jude Classic a week before the 2016 U.S. Open (and before it became a WGC event), and then successfully defended his title by one stroke over Charl Schwartzel and Whee Kim. He picked up his third victory in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, in a playoff over Collin Morikawa when the PGA Tour restarted following a 3-month hiatus due to the COVUD-19 pandemic. The former Florida State All-American was named the PGA Tour's Rookie of the Year for the 2014-15 season. He tied for second in the 2013 NCAA Division I Championship and was a member of the victorious USA Palmer Cup Team. In 2017, he played on the victorious USA Presidents Cup Team. His father, Jay, is a former professional tennis player who has coached at the University of Miami (Fla.) and Florida International as well as with the U.S. National Team.
