Pieters will play in his third U.S. Open after being added to the all-exempt field on Aug. 23 by being No. 73 in the Official World Golf Ranking. The Belgian has enjoyed a steady rise since turning professional in 2013 after a stellar three-year career at the University of Illinois, where he won the 2012 NCAA Division I individual title and the 2013 Big Ten Championship. As a professional, he has posted four victories on the European Tour, the most recent coming in the 2019 D+D Real Czech Masters. He also finished fourth in the first Olympic golf competition in 112 years, which helped him be a captain's selection for the 2016 Ryder Cup Matches at Hazeltine National. Pieters also twice represented Belgium in the World Amateur Team Championship (2010 and 2012) and represented the victorious European Team in the 2012 Palmer Cup.
