The Spaniard earned his first U.S. Open start by finishing eighth on the points list of the European Tour's five-event UK Swing. Otaegui turned professional in 2011, but it would six years before he collected the first of two European Tour victories in the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play. Win No. 2 came a year later in the Belgian Knockout. Otaegui's amateur career included a victory in the 2010 Boys Amateur Championship conducted by The R&A, where he defeated Germany's Matt Rottluff, 4 and 3, in the championship match at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club. In 2008, he represented Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup, and in 2010 he represented Spain in the World Amateur Team Championship.
