Final Qualifying: Shot 69-66--135 at Lambton Golf & Country Club, in York, Ontario, Canada, on June 2
Kanaya, a former recipient of the McCormack Medal for being the leading amateur in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, is set to make his third U.S. Open start after being a late addition to the 2025 field as the first alternate from the Canada final qualifier. Kanaya edged Max McGreevy in a playoff for first alternate after both posted 5-under 135 over 36 holes. Before turning pro, Kanaya spent 55 weeks atop the World Amateur Golf Ranking and even claimed a Japan Golf Tour event during that span. He turned professional in 2020 and has since amassed five more victories on the Japan Golf Tour. He owns seven worldwide victories. As an amateur, he represented Japan in the 2016 and 2018 World Amateur Team Championships and was on the International Team for the 2019 Palmer Cup.
