The Kent State graduate and Ohio native will make his first U.S. Open start after being added to the field on June 9. Johnson was involved in a 5-for-1 playoff for the last spot at the Columbus, Ohio, final qualifier, but nabbed first-alternate status ahead of PGA Tour winners Eric Cole, Max Homa and Rickie Fowler. He got into the field when Bud Cauley became fully exempt via the Top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking as of June 9. Cauley was one of the six qualifiers in Columbus. This will be Johnson's sixth USGA championship. He advanced to the Round of 64 in the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur at Martis Camp, where current world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler won. Although he is from Barberton, Ohio, he now resides in West Palm Beach, Fla., and competes on PGA Tour Americas. In 2020, he was the runner-up in the Korn Ferry Tour's TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes. He turned professional in 2019 after playing at Kent State. Johnson also has competed on the Advocates Professional Golf Association, a circuit that provides opportunities for minority players.
