The native of Dacula, Ga., and University of Illinois graduate qualified for his second consecutive U.S. Open after advancing through both stages of qualifying. The 2025 U.S. Open will be Buchanan's professional debut. He advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 U.S. Amateur, losing to fellow Big 10 rival Noah Kent at Hazeltine National Golf Club. As a junior at Illinois, Buchanan was named 2023-24 Big 10 Player of the Year, leading the Illini to the NCAA Championship, where they won the 72-hole stroke-play portion of the team competition. As a sophomore, he was the runner-up to Florida's Fred Biondi at the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz. His father, John, played baseball at Mercer University. He also advanced to the Round of 32 of the 2023 U.S. Amateur and competed in the 2024 John Deere Classic on a sponsor's exemption.
