The South African will make his first U.S. Open start after earning one of the 14 available berths in the Columbus, Ohio, sectional qualifier. Van Rooyen shot 5-under 137 at Brookside Golf & Country Club and Scioto Country Club. He attended the University of Minnesota before turning professional in 2013. Since then, he has posted two victories, including the 2017 Hainan Open on the European Challenge Tour. He also won the 2017 Eye of Africa PGA Championship on the South African-based Sunshine Tour. He is coming off a tie for eighth in last month's PGA Championship at Bethpage State Park's Black Course. He also tied for 17th in last year's Open Championship at Carnoustie, which was his first major-championship start.
