Born in McAllen, Texas, and raised in Reynosa, Mexico, Ancer owns dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship. He played at Odessa (Texas) Junior College and the University of Oklahoma, where he registered a pair of wins. He graduated in 2013 with a degree in general studies and turned pro the same year.
