2024 Championship | Bryson DeChambeau claimed his second U.S. Open title with a dramatic up-and-down par from a bunker on the 72nd hole to edge 2011 champion Rory McIlroy by one stroke. DeChambeau, who won in 2020 at Winged Foot Golf Club with no fans in attendance due to COVID-19, faced a 54-yard bunker shot that he executed to perfection, the ball stopping 4 feet from the flagstick. He holed the ensuing putt to complete an eerily similar par save that the late Payne Stewart and fellow Southern Methodist University graduate executed to win the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. Quotable | “I wanted to get this one done, especially at such a special place that means so much to me, SMU, my [late] dad (Jon who died in 2022 from diabetes), what Payne meant to him, 1000th USGA championship. Stack them on top. That bunker shot was the shot of my life. I’ll forever be thankful that I’ve got longer wedges so I can hit it farther, get it up there next to the hole.” -- Bryson DeChambeau |
