The former two-time Big 10 Conference player of the year at the University of Iowa outlasted Ohio State standout Max Moldovan in an eight-hole playoff to garner the final spot at the Springfield (Ohio) Country Club final qualifier. It will be Schaake's first U.S. Open, but the second member of his family to compete in the event. Older brother Carson qualified for the 2021 championship at Torrey Pines. Alex also survived local qualifying at Omaha (Neb.) Country Club. Schaake earned his Big 10 accolades in 2019 and 2021. He played the entire final qualifier without a caddie, choosing instead to push a cart.
