The former U.S. Ryder Cupper is returning to the U.S. Open for the first time in seven years after posting 9-under 135 at the Lakes Golf & Country Club, in Westerville, Ohio, on June 8. This will be the 10th start for the former University of Kentucky All-American who was a member of the victorious 2005 USA Walker Cup Team. He turned professional later that year and has since won five times on the PGA Tour, including the 2019 Genesis Open. He also won the 2014 Wells Fargo Championship. Holmes underwent brain surgery in 2011 and doctors discovered he was allergic to to the adhesive used on the webbed titanium plate at the base of his skull. He was airlifted from his home in Kentucky to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for another surgery. Holmes returned to the PGA Tour in January 2022. As an amateur, Holmes won consecutive Kentucky State Opens in 2003-04. In 2016 he finished solo third at The Open Championship and tied for fourth at the Masters. He was a member of victorious U.S. Ryder Cup Teams in 2008 and 2016, and a winning Presidents Cup Team in 2015.
