F-13: Top 5 players in the 2026 FedExCup standings, not otherwise exempt, as of May 18, 2026
The former University of Louisville standout will compete in his second U.S. Open, and first since qualifying as an amateur for the 2021 championship at Torrey Pines, by being among the top 5 players in the FedExCup standings, not otherwise exempt. Schmid comes to Shinnecock fresh off a tie for fourth in the PGA Championship at Aronimink. He is still seeking his first victory since turning pro in 2021. In the COVID-19-shortened season of 2019-20, Schmid had a scoring average of 69.91, the second-best mark in school history. In 2020, he defended his European Amateur title. In The Open Championship in 2021, Schmid posted a second-round 65, which matched the lowest round posted by an amateur originally established by Tom Lewis in 2011 that also occurred at Royal St. George's Golf Club, in England. He claimed the Silver Medal for being the low amateur. He joined the DP World Tour and was named the Sir Henry Cotton Award winner for the top rookie for the 2021, despite joining the circuit in July. He was the runner-up in the Dutch Open. While at Louisville, he represented the International Team in the 2020 and 2021 Palmer Cups.
