Final Qualifying: Shot 71-63 at The Lakes Golf & C.C. and Brookside Golf & C.C. in Columbus, Ohio, on June 5
The former University of Georgia All-American will make his second U.S. Open, and first as a professional, after shooting 10-under 134 in final qualifying in Columbus, Ohio. He turned professional in 2021 and won the 2022 Rex Hospital Open on the Korn Ferry Tour. He earned his PGA Tour card for the 2022-23 season by finishing 16th on the KFT money list, and in January he was the runner-up to 2021 U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm at The American Express Championship. Thompson reached the Round of 64 in the 2020 U.S. Amateur, shortly after being a quarterfinalist in the Western Amateur. The Golf Coaches Association of America named him a first-team All-America. He was one of five finalists for the Jack Nicklaus Award and one of three finalists for the Haskins Award; both awards are for the top players in college golf. He also finished 23rd in the PGA Tour's RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club. He won the 2020 Jones Cup Invitational with a 54-hole, tournament-record score of 13-under 203. The win earned him a start in the 2020 RSM Classic. Thompson also was named to the 2020 USA Palmer Cup Team.
